Brazil off to perfect start with victory over Belgium

Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 10, 2015 - Brazil cruised on Friday to a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-16, 25-14) over Belgium in their first game in Pool D.

Belgium opened the match with excellent performance racing off quickly into a 4-0 lead. They managed to keep the pace until the first technical timeout leading 8-4, but then Brazil struck back. As Laura Heyrman sent her spike wide the match came level at 10-10. Juciely Cristina Barreto impacted the game with a great attack and the match saw Brazil jump out 16-14. Belgium make a substitution bringing Celine Van Gestel into the game, but it did little to slow Brazil’s momentum with the score at 19-15 as the hosts eventually took the set 25-17.

Set two started poorly for Belgium and saw Brazil taking an 8-1 advantage at the first technical timeout. With some good actions Belgium managed to narrow the margin to four point at 13-9, but it was Brazil taking the next three points for a comfortable 16-9 lead. The late stage of the set did not see any turning point as Brazil closed it 25-16.

The early set three saw Brazil’s lead quickly blow out to 8-2 before, in a familiar pattern as set two, Belgium came close to 14-10 after scoring three consecutive points. Brazil, however, did not allow their opposition to catch up and quickly pulled away into a 21-11 lead before Jaqueline's spike concluded the set in their favour at 25-14.
