Cuba overcome Kazakhstan 3-0 in World Grand Prix

Kazakhstan defend in their loss to Cuba on Friday

Trujillo, Peru, July 3, 2015 – Cuba overcame Kazakhstan 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) in a Pool P match in the FIVB World Grand Prix in Trujillo on Friday. The Cuban win avenges a 3-2 loss to Kazakhstan last week.

Cuba won the spiking competition 43-27, had a superior block (5-4) and dominated service (12-2). Cuba’s biggest enemy were themselves as they committed 28 errors to Kazakhstan’s 15.

The individual stats make even more interesting reading. Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu was the top scorer in the match with 23 points, including five aces, while teammate Jennifer Yanet Alvarez Hernandez contributed 16 points with seven aces. No Kazakhstan player could get into double figures, with Sana Anarkulova topping the scorers with nine points.

But the match wasn’t all plain sailing for Cuba. In the first set, Kazakhstan were still in with a chance at 20-21 before Cuba pulled away. The Cubans dominated the second set and looked to be running away with the third at 16-10 but Kazakhstan came back to close the gap to 23-24 before missing out on a chance to pull a set back as Cuba finished things off.
