Buijs steers Netherlands’ straight-set win in Pool L

 

Formosa, Argentina, July 12, 2015 – Anne Buijs’ splendid performance directed the Netherlands to overpower Canada 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) in Pool L of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix at the Stadium Sincuentario on Sunday.

Buijs charted 22 points, including 17 spikes, three blocks and two aces, while Tabitha Love scored 14 markers for Canada. The Netherlands excellent reception game powered them to have a great transition that converted 42 points from the attack line.

The Netherlands held a slim lead 8-7 in the first set as Canada challenged them point-by-point. The Dutch team blanked Canada and built a three-point cushion at 11-7 but Canada were still persistent and moved to within two points 16-14. Buijs, Robin De Kruijf  and Lonneke Sloetjes teamed-up late in the set to give the Netherlands the first set victory 25-22.

The second set was tied at 5-all but Buijs’ backrow hit a couple of plays later gave the Netherlands the advantage at 9-6. Netherlands took control and secured the second set 25-16. Canada managed to gain advantage in the third set 7-4 but the Netherlands reacted quickly and scored four consecutive points to regain the advantage 8-7. Laura Dijkema’s fine setting allowed the Dutch hitters to unleash a barrage of attacks to stretch their lead. Canada fought back but could not contain Buijs, who sealed the set and match 25-21.
