Ramirez stands out in Colombian four-set triumph

Colombia earned three points in Pool P with their 3-0 upset on hosts Peru

Trujillo, Peru, July 3, 2015 – Cinda Maria Ramirez stood out in Colombia’s 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-23) win against hosts Peru in Pool P of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix at the Guillermo Angulo Coliseum on Friday.

Ramirez outshined the other scorers with her 17 points, built from 15 attacks and two blocks. Maguilaura Frias and Angela Leyva scored 11 points for Peru. The Colombians outscored the Peruvians in attack and block, which turned out to be their biggest weapons in avenging their loss in their previous encounter last June 27.

Colombia played like a well-oiled machine as they led 9-2 in the first set. Peru struck back with three straight points but Ramirez quickly extinguished Peru’s fiery run with her own solid swings to give Colombia a seven-point cushion at 16-7. Peru coach Mauro Marasciulo called timeout as the Colombian advantage ballooned to nine points at 18-9. Colombia maintained their lead to close the first set 25-17.

Peru led at the start of the second set 5-4, but Colombia grabbed the lead 8-6 that prompted them to scale a bigger lead as the home team struggled to find their rhythm. Colombia ended the set 25-17. In the third set, Peru kept a four-point lead at 9-5, and then Colombia managed to post a minor threat on the Peruvian attack with their net defence. Peru managed to get out of that situation and kept their lead until the score of 18-12. Colombia started with their assault to trail within one point at 22-21, until the visiting side tied it 23-all. Colombia still prevailed in the third set as they scored the final two points to seize the 25-23 win.
