Brilliant blocking gives Turkey 3-0 win over Dominicans

There was no way past the Turkey block on the day

Stuttgart, Germany, July 17, 2015 – Turkey beat the Dominican Republic in straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) in their FIVB Grand Prix match on Saturday.

In set one, Gaila Lopez and Erasma Martinez in particular attacked well for Dominican Republic, while Polen Uslupehlivan and Kubra Akman hit back for Turkey. But while the sides hit a similar number of spikes, the Dominicans made more errors and didn’t block quite as well; Turkey took the it 25-20.

Dominican Republic started the second set stronger, but once again the superior Turkish block gave them the slight edge. They took the set 25-17. And despite the Dominicans fighting really hard in set three – and leading 14-7 – Turkey closed out the match. With Kubra Akman joining Polen Uslupehlivan in the point-grabbing, it was their block that ultimately proved the difference between the two sides. They won the set 25-20, and the match.

Reassume Martinez was the match’s top scorer with 19 points, while Uslupehlivan got 13 for Turkey. Read the live text commentary from this match here
