Peru bounce back with 3-0 win against Cuba

Angela Leyva scored 16 points in Peru's 3-0 win against Cuba

Trujillo, Peru, July 4, 2015 - Peru beat Cuba 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) on Saturday, swiftly putting behind them their first loss of the 2015 World Grand Prix the previous night against Colombia. The two highest individual scorers in Group 3 were at it again, with Cuba's Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu top-scoring with 19 and Angela Leyva leading Peru with 16.

The sides traded blows early with Leyva wasting no time getting herself on the scoresheet. Vargas Abreu was also powerful, but Leyva ended the first set with a spike to give Peru a 25-23 win.

A Vargas Abreu ace helped Cuba take an 8-5 lead into the first TTO of the second set. Leyva blocked well though to stem the tide and a pair of aces from Carla Rueda helped Peru get it to within one point at 12-13. Leyva and Vargas Abreu continued to showcase their power, but again Peru prevailed, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 second-set win.

Rueda's outstanding service featured again in the third and fittingly, a Rueda ace handed Peru a 25-20 third-set win and the match in straight sets. Rueda scored all five of her points from service as Peru won their fourth match from five 2015 World Grand Prix appearances.
