Defending champions Brazil take on Japan

 

Brazil and Japan will meet for the 38th time in the World Grand Prix

Head-to-Head
·    These teams have met 37 times in the World Grand Prix. Japan recorded only four wins against Brazil in the competition of which three came in five sets.
·    This match is the most played fixture in WGP history. Brazil and China follow with 35 matches played.
·    Brazil have won the last five meetings, losing only one set. They have only once failed to win a set themselves against Japan (5 August 2001)
·    Japan and Brazil met in the London 2012 Olympic Games semifinal in which Brazil prevailed in straight sets. Brazil won the gold medal by beating United States in the final. Japan won bronze in their match against Korea Republic.
·    Earlier this season on 3 July, Brazil defeated Japan 3-1. Five Brazilian players scored at least 13 points that match. Japan had only two such players.

Brazil
·    Brazil suffered their first defeat this campaign in their second Final Round match against Russia (3-0), ending a 14-match winning streak in the World Grand Prix.
·    Brazil failed to win a single set in the competition for the first time in four years since a straight sets defeat to United States in the 2011 World Grand Prix final.
·    The Brazilians have not lost consecutive matches in the World Grand Prix since the 2007 Final Round when they suffered four successive defeats.
·    The last time Brazil failed to win a set in two matches in a row was in 2002, losing to Germany and Russia in straight sets.

Japan
·    After losing to United States in straight sets in the first Final Round match, Japan also failed to win a set in their second match against China (3-0).
·    Japan have either won or lost their last six Final Round matches in straight sets. The last time they played more than three sets in the Final Round was in their 3-1 win over Russia last year.
·    Japan can lose four consecutive Final Round matches without winning a set for the first time in World Grand Prix history.
