Ocasio and Cruz steer Puerto Rican victory

 

Puerto Rico's Aurea Cruz faces a single Canadian blocker

Carolina, Puerto Rico, July 3, 2015 – Puerto Rico recorded a home victory with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-10, 24-26, 25-14) win over Canada in Pool K of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on Friday.

Sheila Ocasio and Aurea Cruz led Puerto Rico with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Stephanie Enright, Karina Ocasio and Alexandra Oquendo combined for 34 more points. Canada’s Tabitha Love and Shanice Marcelle scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Puerto Rico outscored Canada in attack 56-33 and serve 6-0, but Canada showed better net defence with a 12-6 margin. 

Puerto Rico showed a solid performance in the first two sets to respectively snatch 25-18 and 25-10 set-victories. However, Puerto Rico were exhausted in the third frame and allowed Canada to snatch victory in the end 26-24. Puerto Rico then recovered from the setback and paced the visiting side with a strong 25-14 finish.
