Overview

Team profile

Peru are making their fourth appearance in the World Grand Prix. Last season was the first time they had taken part since 2011 when they finished 16th, and on their debut in 1994 they came 11th. In 2014 they finished sixth in Group 2, winning a match against Canada and two against Cuba. This year they are in Group 3 and will host the week two matches in Trujillo. They did not qualify for the 2014 World Championship.

The 1980s represented a golden age for Peruvian volleyball. With a team consisting of Natalia Malaga, who is now a coach, the team won silver at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, silver at the 1982 World Championship and bronze at the 1986 World Championship. More recently the team has failed to reach those heights, their last Olympic appearance was in 2000 and they have not won a World Championship medal since the 1986 bronze. At continental level they have always been a force and have won a medal at every South American Championships since 1951, including a bronze in 2013. They have won the title 12 times, but the most recent triumph was in 1993. They have qualified for the 2015 Pan American Games in Canada, a tournament where they have not reached the podium since 1991 but have won five silver and three bronze medals over the years.
