Vargas alone can’t stop Colombia

Melissa Vargas scored 31 points for Cuba, but this was not enough to overcome Colombia

Trujillo, Peru, July 5, 2015 – Colombia claimed the top spot on Pool P final rankings in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 3.  Despite the fantastic performance of Cuba’s Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu and the support of the Peruvian fans on the stands in Trujillo, the Caribbean could not put a stop on Colombia’s winning streak and the latter stayed unbeaten with a 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 27-25) victory on Sunday.

Vargas topped the scorers’ chart of the match with an amazing 31 points, while Amanda Coneo with 19 points and Cindy Maria Ramirez with 18 were most prolific for Colombia.

Colombia did not face any major issues in the first set.  Garnishing it with four aces, they cruised to a 25-14 win.  The Cubans woke up in the second set.  Their blocks started producing good results and they were in the lead through the most part. Melissa Vargas was now on fire and she was the one who closed the set with a brilliant spike for 25-21.

Vargas continued to shine in set three, but now Colombia had an important weapon working for them – Cuba’s unforced errors.  There were far too many of those, so the South Americans managed to take the driving seat and win by 25-20.  On the Cuban side, Vargas kept her one-woman show on, but it was not enough to stop Colombia.  The ending was intense.  The South Americans could not take advantage of the three consecutive match points they had at 24-21 and Cuba tied.  But four rallies further down the road Colombia was rejoicing at 27-25 and the victory.
